Welcome to Bath’s new Italian restaurant De Gustibus. I dined here for lunch the other week, and sadly there were only three covers in the restaurant. Nevertheless, the food was great and sought to provide an innovative take on Italian cuisine. Would I recommend it? Yes, but do go for dinner service when there’s a bit more atmosphere. Would I return? Probably not, don’t get me wrong the food was good but not mesmerising. P.S I'm hard to please and food pics to follow.
To start, I had the smoked sea bass tartar served with ginger mayonnaise. When it came out I was a bit taken back at the size of the puff/crisp it came with, lol it was actually huge. Nevertheless, it was, in fact, the right size to eat the tartar and was extremely light and worked well. One thing that I didn’t like about the dish was the huge chunks of what I think was lime that was scattered around the plate, far too big and would’ve worked much better in a small quantity - no one wants to eat huge chunks of super sour lime.
I just wish they got rid of the purple in the entrance to the restaurant as it feels like a bar in a nightclub. Anyway, for main, I had the mixed seafood, which was very tasty. Though, I thought the squid could’ve been cooked slightly more with a little bit more colour on it. Also, vegetables of some description on the plate - please!! I don't like having to buy sides.
