Roaming around Barcelona's markets there are many things you must try. However, there is one food not to be missed and that is Iberco de Belota a.k.a the ham of all hams. Retailing for €220 a kilo this stuff is pricey! To put it into perspective the Parma Ham that waitrose sells is about €38 a kilo....so for ten tiny slices of Iberco de Belota it's going to set you back about €20. I thought to myself no way could this be worth it. But, I was in fact shocked at the difference in taste. It was so rich and infused with the nutty essence of acorns it actually shocked me. It's that good maybe I need to start making the world most expensive bagels to eat for lunch everyday!
I hate British supermarkets...they're dull, the food looks unappetising and they have a distinct lack of seafood on display. Popping over to Europe the likes of Carrefour or E.Lecler have an abundance of the sweet jewels of the sea on display. I write here, I plead with you and a I call for a British Supermarket Revolution!
When I was about six I fell in love with mushrooms. I was served Morels (a type of mushroom) in a creamy garlicky sauce. That was it, my relationship with them was established and they just happened to be one of the most expensive varieties of fungi. Yay! I had my first addiction! Sorry you had to fund it Mum! Since then my love of mushrooms has evolved and here are some fine varieties on display at the La Boqueria market in Barcelona.
The Edible Flower:
Roses are red, Violets are blue, Nasturtiums are peppery, And I love them too, Though their texture can be like paper, They do come from nature, Embrace you hater, And take the plate from the waiter |
